Environmental Psychology is the topic for my 10,000 word diploma dissertation.

Investigating and researching spacial attraction and the reasoning behind peoples attraction to specific areas and public spaces. why skaters collect outside council buildings, why business men love starbucks etc.

This is just a working topic which will develop with further research into the field, through journals, books and lectures.

my starting point is the book ‘ The Architecture of Happiess’ by Alain de Botton

Seattle art museum

Seattle art museum has recently been extended with an Olympic sculpture park, created around a z pattern. It explores the 4 zones which a person connects with when approaching a coast line- valley, grove, meadow and beach. It helps to extending the relationship between air inside a gallery and art found in the city and in forests. This idea of inside outside is one my ecology concept is exploring. The Olympic sculpture park also offers roof top walk ways and public space.

Greenhead concept decisions!

From my site appaisal i have assessed that my ecology centre needs to be

two stores or less
inward facing to reduce the possibility of the ecology centre dominating the park
dynamic and have open circulation to increase the transition between the park and well used south south east corner.
make use of changes of level on site
use full site to create journey and experience in surrounding landscape
interactive, child friendly and entertaining

Ecology centre

i have been mulling over some ideas for the ecology centre at Greenhead, i would like it to be very tactile, possibly aimed at children. With the war memorial being on a direct axis of the park yet being static, i would like to creat a very dynamic space. from this i have been looking at access points in the park and investigating the concept of the centre being under ground.

Although the glasshouse is listed, i am currently investigating ideas which remove this structure.

Why is it that group work is always such a stressful experience?! As expected half my group didnt turn up and some of the other groups did it in the wrong format. It concerns me when it is my grade on the line, so im spending christmas redoing some of it and laying it out in a clearer format. I feel i will get in trouble for this but need to do it to understand the site.

it really stresses me out that i dont seem to get any better at cad!

i have the ideas and the design i just cant make them look great in cad, which means il never do well!

Air experiments

Today has been spent experimenting with models for the information pavilion. We have also named it

CONTACT which i think is quiet discriptive of the project.
